Kirkham Henry Performing Arts CIC
We are a Community Interest Company (CIC).
The company’s activities will provide benefit to people of all ages, abilities and social groups within the local community of Ryedale and North Yorkshire in general.
Activities 1 (What the company is being set up to do)
To promote, maintain, improve and advance the education of the community of Ryedale and North Yorkshire in the arts of dance, mime, drama, music and all aspects of the performing arts through classes, workshops and performances. Kirkham Henry provides a happy, friendly, disciplined and focussed environment which allows its members both young and mature to flourish. The philosophy of the Centre is one of care and concern for each individual aiming to achieve the personal and vocational development of each member to the best of his/her ability.
How will the activity benefit the community?
The community will benefit by the fact that Kirkham Henry Performing Arts CIC contributes to the 5 Outcomes of ‘Every Child Matters’:-
Be Healthy – The arts of drama, dance and music are very physical activities which promote energy and mental and emotional well-being and lead to a healthier lifestyle.
Be safe – Our members are encouraged to attend as many classes as they wish after school and all day Saturday each week. They are totally committed to learning in a safe, secure and happy environment. Thus we help towards keeping young people in Ryedale and York off the streets and away from anti-social behaviour, drug-taking and alcohol abuse.
Enjoy and Achieve – It is a well known fact that attending performing arts classes helps young people to develop confidence and self esteem. Our members thoroughly enjoy performing and achieve great pleasure from entertaining the local community.
Make a Positive Contribution – Our members are encouraged to assist the teachers with their classes, help with choreography for the performances, engage in decision making, develop positive working relationships, choose not to bully or discriminate, successfully deal with significant life changes and challenges and develop enterprising behaviour.
Achieve Economic Wellbeing – Many of our members go on to train in the arts upon leaving school and perform on the professional stage. Those who choose to go to university or find alternative employment benefit from having gained transferable skills, confidence and poise from their training in the arts from a young age.
Activities 2 (What the company is being set up to do)
To promote the preservation and protection of good health and the relief of sickness in particular by the provision of health education information and health and fitness activities and such other activities for the benefit of the community.
How will the activity benefit the community?
Be Healthy The arts of drama, dance and music are very physical activities which promote energy and mental and emotional well-being and lead to a healthier lifestyle. Taking part in adult group exercise also builds friendships and helps to combat loneliness and depression in the elderly. Community members of all ages benefit from health and fitness classes at Kirkham Henry: – from Keep Fit for ‘grannies’; adult ballet, jazz and tap classes; belly dancing workshops; adult drama workshops; community choirs to individual adult singing lessons and more!

ANGELA KIRKHAM – Director of Kirkham Henry Performing Arts
M.I.D.T.A R.A.D R.T.S LIFE MEMBER OF ROYAL ACADEMY OF DANCE
Angela began her training at the age of 3 in Middlesbrough. By the age of 12 she had won the English Ballet Championship and successfully passed her Royal Academy of DanceIntermediate examination – being the youngest in the country to do so at the time.
On moving to Ryedale at the age of 14 her dreams of continuing with her training were shattered when she found no dance school in the area could take her on as she was too advanced for any classes they could offer. So with encouragement from her parents she travelled to Leeds to start her teacher training. Meanwhile, after finding out about Angela’s dancing abilities new friends of her parents requested that she taught their children to give them something to do on a Saturday morning. Therefore the Kirkham School of Dancing opened in March 1971 at St. Joseph’s Church Hall, Pickering for 1 hour with 7 pupils. Angela opened the Kirkham Henry Performing Arts Centre together with Jennie Henry in 1989 and the Centre currently has 400 students with over 100 on the waiting list!
Angela has worked over the years as an adjudicator for Dance Festivals/ Choreographer on touring shows, choreographing children’s ballets for summer schools, directing RyedaleYouth Theatre for 19 years, helping support The Louise Browne Yorkshire Ballet Scholarship Centre as Chairman, helping organize backstage for the Nureyev/Fontaine young dancer award, coaching ballet children for examinations and auditions throughout the country and coaching male dancers for the Billy Elliot school. Angela has also taught under-privileged children, who did not want to do anything with their life, to dance and be proud of their achievements. She also teaches senior citizens to help them stay young and mobile.
Over the 40 years that Angela has been teaching she has trained thousands of students to professional level, many of whom are now performing in musical theatre productions in theWest End and on tour, on Cruise Ships and in The Royal Ballet Company and ballet companies across the world. Others have chosen to become professional musicians, theatre technicians, stage managers, teachers of dance, music and musical theatre etc. or to study for alternative careers at Universities and colleges throughout the UK with the help of the transferrable skills taught at Kirkham Henry.
Angela Is a life member of The Royal Academy of Dance

BARBARA WOOD - B.A Hons
I was a founder member of The Friends of Kirkham Henry way back in 1995 when a group of mothers decided to do something positive to help Angela and Jennie to improve the centre. We initially raised funds to buy paint and materials so that we could decorate the centre and to provide new fire doors, windows and a new staircase to the upper floor.
Ryedale Youth Theatre was formed in 1991 and I was a member of the original committee. After becoming Chairman of Ryedale Youth Theatre in 1995 my colleague and RYT secretary Barbara Murray and I were responsible for successfully applying for Charity Status for RYT in 1996. I am still very actively involved as both Chairman and Production Manager.
My three children trained at Kirkham Henry from a very early age and are now working professionally in the world of Music, Dance and TV.
In 2002 I embarked upon a 3-year fulltime course at York St. John University. Since graduating in 2005 with a B.A. HonsDegree in Communication Arts, specializing in Drama, I have thoroughly enjoyed my position as a locum drama teacher at Kirkham Henry Performing Arts.
I have been involved in many major fundraising projects for various charitable organizations over the years and have successfully applied for Arts Awards and other funding to benefit the centre. More recently was the £5.000 funding awarded to RYT to renovate its costume storage facility at the Kirkham Henry Performing Arts Centre.
My favorite occupation is sitting in a theatre seat watching dance, drama, musical theatre etc. I have shared my love of the arts with many by organizing theatre trips for both Kirkham Henry and Ryedale Youth Theatre and intend to continue doing so for the benefit of all.
MARK POOLE
Mark has enjoyed strong links with Kirkham Henry Performing Arts for nearly twenty years. After meeting his Malton-born wife Emma in Oxford where they trained to be teachers, the newly-weds moved to Malton in 1992 and Mark quickly followed in Emma’s footsteps and became a pupil at Kirkham Henry. Mark was massively impressed with the opportunities afforded to the people of Malton through the vision, energy, passion and talent of Miss Angela and Miss Jennie; Emma and her two sisters had all grown up as Kirkham Henry students thoroughly enjoying their training in ballet, dancing and singing.
Wishing he had experienced similar opportunities as a child Mark thought it never too late to tread the boards and so started with singing lessons under the expert tutelage of Jenny Henry. This gave him the confidence to go on and perform in many musicals, shows and pantomimes with Malton & Norton Musical Society where he has earned local acclaim, in particular for his comedy acting. Mark also loved working with Miss Jenny in co-producing the Society’s annual “Kaleidoscope” musical concert of years gone by, bringing together musicians and actors of all ages and which enabled him to work in particular with children and young people.
Mark is now enjoying early retirement from a twenty year career as Headteacher of three schools in North Yorkshire and a former Inspector/Adviser for North Yorkshire County Council. This is allowing him to pursue his interests in professional cookery and to spend more time focusing on his charity work. Mark is delighted to be a Director of Kirkham Henry and says: “It is an honour and a privilege to be involved in the hard work, passion and dedication of the Centre as it continues to inspire the youngsters of our community and grow and harness a wealth of remarkable talent.”
